Has BPC-157 Combined with TB-500 Been Studied?

No. The two published papers referenced on this page each studied one compound on its own. One was a 2025 rat study of BPC 157, and the other a 2010 review of animal studies of thymosin beta-4 (Tβ4), the peptide that TB-500 is based on. Neither tested BPC-157 and TB-500 together. This page summarizes each study separately so researchers can review the evidence for each compound.

BPC-157 and TB-500 Research Background: A 2025 BPC 157 Rat Study and a 2010 Thymosin Beta-4 Animal Review

▼

About This Page

This page covers two separate papers:

  • BPC 157: Matek et al. (2025), Pharmaceutics. A rat study of oral BPC 157 after surgical detachment of the quadriceps muscle.
  • Thymosin β4: Philp and Kleinman (2010), Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences. A review of animal studies of thymosin β4 in eye, skin, heart, brain and sepsis models.

The studies used different species, models, routes and outcomes. Their results cannot be combined, and they do not provide evidence about the two compounds used together.

Study 1: BPC 157 in a Rat Quadriceps Detachment Model (Matek et al., 2025)

Design: Male Wistar rats (6 per group per time point) had the quadriceps surgically detached from its attachments on the femur and pelvis. They received BPC 157 by mouth, first by stomach tube and then in drinking water, or plain water. Researchers assessed them from day 1 to day 90.

Findings reported by the authors: Compared with water-treated controls, BPC 157-treated rats showed:

  • Better Walking Recovery Index and Motor Function Index scores
  • Elimination of the leg contracture seen in controls
  • Thigh muscle diameter closer to normal
  • A smaller muscle-to-bone gap on ultrasound, and findings consistent with reattachment on MRI and histology

Limitations: One rat model, small groups and male animals only. Much of the published BPC 157 research comes from the same research group.

Study 2: Thymosin Beta-4 in Animal Tissue-Repair Models (Philp & Kleinman, 2010)

Design: A narrative review of published animal studies of thymosin β4, a naturally occurring 43-amino-acid, actin-binding peptide.

Findings described in the review:

  • In rat and mouse eye- and skin-injury models, topical Tβ4 was associated with faster wound closure. In skin wounds, it was also associated with more collagen deposition and angiogenesis.
  • In mouse and pig heart models, Tβ4 was associated with better cardiac cell survival or smaller infarct size.
  • In rat brain-injury, mouse autoimmune encephalomyelitis and rat endotoxin-shock models, it was associated with reduced neuron loss, inflammation or mortality.

Limitations: Each finding comes from a separate study. Most studies used full-length Tβ4, which may differ from materials sold as TB-500. One author disclosed consulting for a company developing Tβ4.

How BPC 157 and Thymosin β4 Differ

  • Structure: BPC 157 is a 15-amino-acid peptide (GEPPPGKPADDAGLV) based on a partial sequence of a protein found in gastric juice. Tβ4 is a 43-amino-acid peptide found inside almost all mammalian cells.
  • Proposed activity: BPC 157 studies by the Zagreb group emphasize blood-vessel and nitric oxide-related effects. Tβ4 studies emphasize actin binding, cell migration and inflammatory signaling.
  • Models: The BPC 157 study used oral delivery in a rat muscle-to-bone injury model. The Tβ4 review covers topical and systemic delivery across many models and species.

What These Studies Do Not Show

  • No referenced study tested BPC-157 and TB-500 together. Any claim of combined or "synergistic" effects would not be supported by these papers.
  • Neither paper establishes effects, safety or dosing for either compound in people.
  • Results from one injury model or species should not be generalized to others.

Conclusion

The BPC 157 rat study (Matek et al., 2025) and the thymosin β4 animal review (Philp & Kleinman, 2010) each describe findings for a single compound in experimental animal models. Researchers interested in either compound should review each source on its own terms. The combination of the two has not been studied in the referenced literature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has the combination of BPC-157 and TB-500 been studied?

Not in the papers referenced here. The BPC 157 study and the thymosin β4 review each examined one compound on its own, in different animal models.

What did the 2025 BPC 157 rat study find?

In male rats with surgically detached quadriceps muscles, oral BPC 157 was associated with muscle-to-bone reattachment on imaging and histology, elimination of contracture, and better walking scores than in water-treated controls over 90 days.

What does the 2010 thymosin beta-4 review cover?

It summarizes animal studies of thymosin β4 in corneal and skin wound models, hair regrowth, heart injury, brain injury, autoimmune encephalomyelitis and endotoxin shock, mostly in mice and rats.

What is the difference between BPC-157 and TB-500?

BPC-157 is a 15-amino-acid peptide based on a gastric juice protein sequence. TB-500 is a name used for synthetic material related to thymosin β4, a 43-amino-acid actin-binding peptide. They are structurally unrelated and were studied separately.

Is TB-500 the same as thymosin beta-4?

"TB-500" is a research name used for synthetic material related to thymosin β4. The 2010 review studied thymosin β4 itself, so researchers should confirm the sequence of any material against the compound in a given study.
